Model for Trezi with SketchUp Components and Groups

When modeling for Trezi with SketchUp, a good understanding of SketchUp's Components and Groups will help in creating objects that behave and display correctly in Trezi's immersive Work Space.

Early on in Trezi's development, a customer sent us a model in which a planter box did not have the same geometry that it did in SketchUp.

The planter box is a component in SketchUp and a quick fix rule-of-thumb for component geometry is to explode the component.

At that moment, the quick fix was all that was needed.

For a better understanding of how SketchUp components and groups work with Trezi, let's take a deeper look at the planter box.

The original planter box component in SketchUp is designed with 2 interlocking parts, a top and a bottom. Both the top and the bottom are a defined component then combined, or nested to make the planter box component. The issue from above was the result of exploding the top component and then nesting the basic geometries with the bottom component to create the planter box.

When creating components in SketchUp, it is important to pay specific attention to nesting. It is valid to nest components however be sure that basic geometry (edges, surfaces) are not nested at the same level with other components. A SketchUp rule of thumb is to either Group It or Make It a Component.

In this video you can see how the distorted planter box behaves. The nested component, the bottom half, has been distorted and the top half maintains the correct shape. Other issues that arise are the ability or inability to use the Reset button or the point of origin.

In this video, both the top and bottom components of the planter box have been exploded and the geometries have been made a group. The planter box now behaves as one piece rather than the 2 separate interlocking parts as designed.

In the third video, the top and bottom are separate components and when brought into Trezi behave as the design intended.

In the 4th video, one planter box is a Group of the top and bottom components and the other planter box is a component with the top and bottom components nested on one level. In both the Group and the Component planter box, full control is possible and object behavior is as designed in the Trezi Work Space.

By creating the planter box using SketchUp components allows the object to perform and be transformed as designed in the Trezi Work Space. Attention to the nesting levels and ensuring that components have not been exploded or nested too deeply will ensure a smooth performance from your SketchUp model when brought to life in Trezi.
